Another great change recently in crowerks web design practice; footer design. 2 years ago footers contained a slew of links, contact info and few other useful attributes. A year ago the trend was to minimize the overall appearance and content down to the nuts and bolts contact info and a copyright (as if those really carry weight). Today footers are becoming a mini-page of sorts and its a beautiful thing! As an include (dynamically placed on all pages…thus editing one file only) these mini pages serve a dual purpose. Not only do they provide extra navigation (occasionally redundant) they serve the mobile web market and those with tech-a.d.d. quite well.

There are a ton of great footers out there now; I reference http://www.skihood.com often. Social media links, partner links, further knowledge and research links, its a roadmap to the most common used items and those that may be too hidden otherwise.

Long live the footer!

With all the touch screens and smartphones with touch capabilities, it seems as if the visual feedback paradigm may shift in the very near future. We’ve been using the same simple javascript for rollovers for about 4 years now (which sounds so long in the realm of internet technology) not because its a do-all be-all but because it works. 99% of the time, it just works.

That said, I haven’t seen the need to change this method until now. Why would we continue to use a rollover when this methodology lends itself to GUI + mouse technology?! With physical interfaces becoming the norm, I forsee rollOver a thing of the early 2000s and thus a piece of the past. Now if I could just figure out feedback vibration for a website I’d be set for another 4.

Well at least not right now. I guess it’s relatively safe to say, given a published letter on apple.com supposedly from mr. Jobs, that holding my breath for a flash plugin (or player I’m not picky) will not be landing on any iThings anytime soon. It does make me wonder a little bit if there is a little more room for silverlight to come into fruition, and cross the pc/mac border. I did find it interesting that the decision “wasn’t profit based rather technically based”. Interesting read none-the-less.

Sure, its been a long time in the making but has anyone else noticed the number of “pages” supporting small businesses growing in addition to the number of “pages” supporting nothing at all? Yeah, Im talking about you Mr. or Mrs. Bonfires! It is the nature of this anonymous beast we all contribute to, for their to be a prankster in all of us. It seems that this type of Facebook Spam could leave a bad taste in the mouths of those same small business owners who barely have time to check their email (oh and look at my new blackberry…now, where’s that back button?). Small businesses who are just realizing the potential in social networking may need a little help as they adopt this technology not in learning the system (you know the FB UI is going to change and throw us all for a loop anyway) but in simplifying their experience. “Tell me what I need to know and where to click on it…”.

When first beginning this style of advertising several years ago, it made sense that if, during creation, these newsletters displayed correctly in a set of browsers they would translate properly in any email client. Not true. Oh SO not true. Now with the “advances” of Outlook where almost nothing renders completely nor accurately, there is a whole new rule-base developing. Here’s a pretty good matrix to demonstrate this compliance just for CSS in Email Clients. Let’s hear your email newsletter issues…

I know I know its been a loooong time since posting here. Funny how life gets in the way of technology! Some of you know but for those that don’t, we had the wonderful opportunity to work with Gramicci last year (Thanks Brit!) dreaming up screen print ideas that they could incorporate in their new Fall/Winter 08 line. Here we are in the season and here’s the shirts! Here’s a crazy interview that they did of us. They were kind enough to send us a pre-release so we’ve been sportin’ the Gramicci for a couple weeks now and so can you. Check out all their great gear (yes, it really is!) and here’s a list of shirts that feature Crowerks art:

Cannon Beach Arts Association Gallery: May 3rd 11am Unveiling, 6pm – 8pm Reception.

Project Synopsis:

(L)EDGE, a conceptual installation for the Cannon Beach Arts Association Gallery, is founded by creatively walking edges of the coastline in effort to find a creative outlet for stories of boundaries, space and tactility. Actively engaging these “Ledges”, how they are bordered by a homogenous moving force and coupling them with personal stories of boundary building is the basis for constructing the work presented in this project. This act of psychogeography attempts to seek canvases within our natural setting in which the creative act is both grown from and produced upon. (L)EDGE is presented through image, video and audio for an immersive experience into the space of constructed boundaries, real or imagined that are equally invaluable.
Looking to my roots of farming and how boundaries are drawn for apparent reasons, I have learned much in recent past about the importance of building ambiguous mental boundaries. The space that these fences border is carved off of the ethereal soup, represented by water and its ability to re-write boundaries. In constant motion and flex, the fabric of the sea is stopped in photograph and captured at a new boundary. Tactility, the dramatic feeling of being on the edge, allows physical space to become a focal point. Producing work in this setting allows me to create pieces both about the space and about the central story.
Drawing from physical artists such as Richard Long and Andy Goldsworthy’s sculptures I trek across physical space with an algorithmic approach of building a representative fence detailing a boundary. Submersing myself into a physical space in effort to let that experience guide my creative practice, I focus on making visual the invisible, which define my own personal boundaries. Lines are drawn in a representative way to demonstrate separated areas, what is kept and what it rejected. Aesthetically, the use of red thread, symbolizes the life-blood and therefore validity of a boundary. Conceptually, fence-posts gathered from my surroundings represent the physical world and are tied together after being installed back upon the ground by the lifeline. Visually, these stories are told from the edge of a constantly changing world; I invite the viewer closer to the ledge to examine their own borders.
